Holiday cartoons are another occasion when editorial cartoonists can phone it in. Gorrell takes this image for the google image search for ‘flagged draped coffin’ and flips it, adds a gradient, and then adds ‘Remember remember the 5th of November May 28th 2012.’
Here’s memorial day 2011:

Which would be preferable to staring directly at the economy and being blinded, I guess?
Obviously Gorrell doesn’t cut corners with his art so he can devote his energy to his metaphors.
also solar eclipses last forever…
looks like he copied and pasted an image from the google image search for ‘sun’ and photoshopped a black circle on top of it instead of searching for solar eclipse.
The AAEC should kick him out, he is not helping editorial cartooning.
And Gorrell gets even lazier, combining a photoshopped image with a generic “single tear drop” obit cartoon. And of course the monster is holding a newspaper.
Are there any cliches he didn’t use here?
as with MC Escher and David Levine Gorrell is somehow able to get away with downright stealing an artist’s work by adding “after [insert artist’s name]”
All the other cartoonists who did obit cartoons for Maurice Sendak actually drew the characters.
If only Congress would approve adequate funding for infrastructure, there would be a bridge over the chasm to the opposite cliff labeled RECOVERY. A good cartoon.
As long as Obama doesn’t look down he can keep walking no problem(cartoon logic)
